How AI Agents Are Changing Software
Software is shifting from tools people operate to systems that can carry out tasks on their behalf.
Traditional software waits for instructions. An AI agent receives a goal, decides on steps, uses tools to carry them out, and reports back.
What makes an agent
- A model capable of reasoning over instructions
- Access to tools: search, databases, APIs
- Memory of the task's context
- Rules about what it may and may not do
The engineering challenge
Agents fail in new ways. They can misinterpret goals, call the wrong tool, or keep going when they should stop. Building them well means narrow scopes, explicit permissions and evaluation against realistic scenarios.
The near-term opportunity is not general-purpose autonomy but dependable agents for specific, well-understood tasks.
